Portuguese Man of War, also known as Portuguese Man o’ War, isn’t a jellyfish but it is closely related and consists of a floating colony of hydrozoans – lots of tiny marine organisms living together and behaving collectively as one animal. The tentacles are capable of giving a nasty sting even when the creature is dead. These photographs were taken at Llanrhystud beach on the west coast of Wales in October 2017, when they were found washing up on British beaches in record numbers.
